I. We invite you to join us at the Wintonbury Coffeehouse on Saturday, March 8th, as three Boston-area singer/songwriters, Rollyn Zoubek, Rachel Taylor, and Courtney Reid, come together as the trio Maeve. Rollyn and Rachel are already old friends of the Wintonbury Coffeehouse - you can hear samples of the terrific sets they've played on our stage in our Listening Room at our website. Courtney is a Wintonbury newcomer, but we had the opportunity to hear her heartfelt and evocative songs at the Inside Out Soul Festival last summer. Maeve, however, is much more than the sum of its parts. When these three singers come together, the mix of folk, acoustic rock and jazz they create is serendipitous, almost magical. Their voices in harmony have a quality that transcends their individual voices, as good as those are. You won't want to miss Maeve in their Wintonbury debut.
We'll open the evening with a set from BookEnds, that acoustic duo of Paul Loether and John Barber. BookEnds brings a warm and likeable blend to the stage, mixing classic folk and gospel songs, gems from the contemporary folk scene, and originals that range from deeply moving to just plain silly. BookEnds has appeared on our stage several times in the past, and they are always worth another listen.
Have you visited the Wintonbury Coffeehouse lately? In addition to coffee, teas, cold beverages and popcorn, we're now offering fresh-brewed lattes and cappuccinos, and home-baked cookies and brownies. And all included in your donation at the door. Come check it out!
The Wintonbury Coffeehouse is held on the second Saturday of the month at Wintonbury Baptist Church, 54 Maple Avenue, Bloomfield, Connecticut. Starting time is 7:30 p.m., and the doors open at 7:00. There is no charge for admission or refreshments. A $7 donation is suggested to cover expenses.
II. Audio File of the Month - "North of Leaving, South of There" - Michael Kelly Blanchard reflects on mortality and loss. Recorded live at the Wintonbury Coffeehouse on January 11, 2003.
III. Link of the Month - Nico is has made quite a name for himself in New England with his incisive lyrics, dynamic stage presence, and hard-to-pigeonhole music, and he's coming to Wintonbury to play an acoustic set on June 14.
IV. Last Month's Coffeehouse - Tom Conlon's first appearance at Wintonbury was a wonderful event - he really is one of the great songwriters and storytellers in the northeast, and we look forward to hosting him again. Shana Cassidy played a terrific opening set to a very appreciative audience. About 85 people enjoyed this one with us.
V. New Coffeehouses - A couple of new coffeehouse are just getting off the ground, and we've added them to the list of Christian coffeehouses in Connecticut at the Wintonbury Coffeehouse web site. Tabernacle Coffeehouse in Southington is holding its first coffeehouse on March 15th with Nate & James. The Life Coffeehouse in Granby has been going some months, but we've inadvertently left them off of our web site list - we're correcting that omission this month. And Bob Stanhope assures us that Brewster, NY is "practically in Connecticut," so we're stretching a point to include Higher Grounds, the coffeehouse at his church. They're holding their first event April 5th with the Doug Hartline Band. You can see the complete list at www.wintonburycoffeehouse.org From the home page, click on "Links and Other Venues," and then select "Christian Coffeehouses."
VI. A Family Note - All who sympathized with Vesper Stamper at the November coffeehouse as she struggled to buckle her accordion straps will be happy to hear that Alban Jack Comfort Stamper came safely into this world on February 3rd. The delivery went smoothly, everyone is fine, and Alban is about the cutest baby we've ever seen - congratulations to Ben, Vesper and Alban Stamper!
