I) On Saturday, June 12th, we are pleased to welcome back Tree by Leaf to the Wintonbury Coffeehouse stage. This exciting young folk trio from Maine draws on influences as diverse as traditional folk, college-radio rock, and old-time gospel. The result is music so good that it makes you feel like the top of your head is coming off. You seem to remember it from somewhere, even though you know you've never heard anything like it before. Tree by Leaf consists of Garrett & Siiri Soucy and Cliff Young. Garrett writes the songs and plays guitar, Cliff plays the piano, and all of them sing. You can check out their web site at www.treebyleaf.org, and you can hear some songs they've played at Wintonbury in our Listening Room.
This month we are also featuring Vesper, the group built around the extraordinary songwriting and vocal talents of Vesper Stamper. Vesper and her husband Ben create a brand of contemporary folk that is uniquely their own: tender, melodic, and evocative. They'll be supported on this trip by Josh Stamper on bass, Jen Allen on piano, Kris Allen on saxophone, and Kit McDermott on drums. You can listen to two songs that they've played on previous visits to Wintonbury in our Listening Room, and can also visit Vesper on the web at http://www.vespersongs.com.
The Wintonbury Coffeehouse is held on the second Saturday of the month at Wintonbury Baptist Church, 54 Maple Avenue, Bloomfield, Connecticut. Starting time is 7:30 p.m., and the doors open at 7:00. There is no charge for admission or refreshments, but a $7 donation is suggested.
II) Audio File of the Month - "Lay Your Head" - Tom Conlon's tender song about healing a damaged relationship. Recorded live at Wintonbury on May 8, 2004.
III) Link of the Month - http://www.neahlee.com - Neah Lee is an exciting young singer/songwriter from New York, and she'll be appearing with the Koo Chung Band at Wintonbury on August 14 - check out her site!
IV) Last Month's Coffeehouse - Tom Conlon touches people's hearts wherever he plays, and the May 8 coffeehouse at Wintonbury was no exception. Tom has an intimate style that just reaches out to everyone in the audience. Elijah Wyman gave us a fine opening set and a glimpse of his own life - we wish him the best as he gets married this August! About 85 people attended this one.
Please visit our web site: The Wintonbury Coffeehouse - A New England Music Venue for a complete schedule of upcoming coffeehouses, information for musicians interested in playing at Wintonbury, and more.
