I. Join us on Saturday, August 13th to hear urban folk artist Tom Conlon. For more than ten years, Tom has been touring the country and charming audiences with great songs and an intimate, storyteller’s style. Tom’s songs are reflective ballads, rich with emotional honesty and poetic lyricism, and his music combines elements of traditional folk, soul, and gospel. Come and experience the music that has won over audiences all over the country. You can visit Tom on the web at www.tomconlonmusic.com

We’ll open the evening with a set from Elijah Wyman, a young singer/songwriter from Boston’s north shore. He’s got a bit of an edge and a real nice way with words. You can check out some of his material at www.elijahwyman.com

The Wintonbury Coffeehouse is held on the second Saturday of the month at Wintonbury Baptist Church, 54 Maple Avenue, Bloomfield, Connecticut. Starting time is 7:30 p.m., and the doors open at 7:00. There is no charge for admission or refreshments. A $7 donation is suggested to cover expenses.

II. Audio File of the Month – “Sweet Abandon” by Maeve. Recorded at Wintonbury a couple of winters ago, Courtney Reid’s amazing love song to her Savior is as stirring as ever.

III. Link of the Month – Brooke Campbell - A singer/songwriter with a clear, sweet voice and moving songs of real life, Brooke will be making her first appearance at Wintonbury on September 10.

IV. Most Recent Coffeehouse – It was a great coffeehouse on June 11 – about 120 people turned out to hear some terrific music from Michael Kelly Blanchard and Josh Strecker. Michael’s wife, Greta, was unable to appear with him this time, but saxophonist Joe Nerny added a nice dimension to Michael’s set. Josh Strecker and his friends played a strong opening set to a very appreciative audience.

For us, though, the June 11 coffeehouse will be especially memorable for an event that has nothing to do with the music. Most of our sound equipment was already in the church great room during the week before the coffeehouse, because it was used for a special church service on June 5th. During the week, a water pipe burst and flooded the great room with water three inches deep. A lot of the church’s furniture and fixtures were ruined, along with most of the coffeehouse sound equipment that was sitting on the floor. (The snake that an anonymous donor gave us a couple of years ago was safe, being inside a plastic bin.) Church employees, volunteers, and a professional cleaning company worked all week to clean and dry out the room so that it would be ready for the coffeehouse and Sunday services. We got through the June coffeehouse with rented equipment (not all of which worked). The church has not reached a settlement with the insurance company yet, but we’re very thankful to say that an anonymous donation to the church enabled us to replace all of the damaged equipment in time for the August coffeehouse. Thank you, anonymous benefactor! And thanks to God who continues to lead us and provide for us.
